An interview with Willem van Lynden, Boost Capital’s sales director

Willem Van LyndenWe caught up with Willem van Lynden, Boost Capital’s sales director, to find out who he is, what he does and what he sees for the future of unsecured finance.

Tell us a bit about your role at Boost Capital and your involvement with brokers?

“I’ve been at Boost Capital for some years now, originally looking after the marketing team before being responsible for the sales team and building relationships with key brokers. Most of our business comes from our commercial finance brokers and therefore they’re a vital partner for us.

“My involvement is two-fold. Firstly, it’s to help develop the strategic relationship with brokers and help improve performance, and secondly, to help make sure the proposals we get via our fantastic team of BDMs have the best possible chance of funding. This includes discussing the deals with our underwriters, particularly looking for any exceptions we may be able to make.

“I am also heavily involved in longer-term operational, criteria and product improvements – and the feedback we get from our brokers is key for me to be able to do this. As a result, we have a lot of very exciting new developments coming in 2020 which we’re investing heavily into, and I’m looking forward to meeting our brokers to tell them all about it.”

What do you think is the future for unsecured lending in the UK?

“From a broker’s point of view, there have never been so many options in the non-banking/alternative finance sector, and as a result, unsecured lenders are under pressure to make sure they give the best possible product and service to make sure they win the business… whilst still maintaining good loan book performance. And this last point could be one of the biggest things to influence the evolution of the unsecured lending market in 2020.

“I also see even faster development of digitalisation and more automated decisioning. Speed of decisioning and how quickly they get their funds is key for customers, brokers and lenders alike, and further tech develops in 2020 will help this hugely.

“Having said that, as the alternative finance sector is still relatively new and taking out a loan for a business is a big decision, there still needs to be a strong human element – especially if the application is more complex.”

What can brokers expect to see from Boost Capital in 2020?

“Without giving too much away just yet, we have some extremely exciting product developments happening this year – all of which will not only help our brokers get more deals done with us but also make their lives easier.”

What’s Willem like outside of work? Tell us about yourself!

“Well, my five-month-old girl is very time-consuming outside of work! But thankfully our whippet dog keeps me sane – he’s a regular feature at our offices too. Since moving out of London a few years ago into the countryside, I also now brew some fine cider!”
